The Karate Kid (2010)

The Karate Kid, known as The Kung Fu Dream in China and Best Kid in Japan and South Korea, is a 2010 martial arts remake of the 1984 film of the same name. Directed by Harald Zwart, produced by Will and Jada Pinkett Smith, the remake stars Jackie Chan and Jaden Smith.

Principal photography for the film took place in Beijing, China; filming began around July 2009 and ended on October 16, 2009. The Karate Kid was released theatrically in the United States on June 11, 2010 and Singapore a day earlier on June 10, 2010.

Plot :

12-year-old Dre Parker (Jaden Smith) and his mother, Sherry (Taraji P. Henson), arrive in Beijing from West Detroit to start a new life. Dre develops a crush on a young violinist, Mei Ying (Wen Wen Han), who reciprocates his attention, but Cheng (Zhenwei Wang), a kung fu prodigy whose family is close to Mei Ying’s, attempts to keep them apart by beating Dre, and later harassing and humiliating him in and around school. During a particularly brutal beating by Cheng and his friends, the enigmatic maintenance man of Dre’s building, Mr. Han (Jackie Chan), comes to Dre’s aid, revealing himself as a kung fu master who adeptly dispatches Dre’s tormentors.

After Han mends Dre’s injuries using fire cupping, they go to Cheng’s teacher, Master Li (Yu Rongguang), to attempt to make peace, but the brutal Li, who teaches his students to show no mercy to their enemies, challenges Dre to a fight with Cheng. When Han declines, Li threatens him, saying that they will not be allowed to leave his school unless either Dre or Han himself fights. Han acquiesces, but insists the fight take place at an upcoming tournament, and that Li’s students leave Dre alone until the tournament. The amused Li agrees.

Han begins training Dre, but Dre is frustrated that Han merely has Dre spend hours taking off his jacket, hanging it up, dropping it, and then putting it back on again. After days of this, Dre refuses to continue, until Han demonstrates to him that the repetitive arm movements in question were Han’s method of teaching Dre defensive block and strike techniques, which Dre is now able to display instinctively when prompted by Han’s mock attacks. Han emphasizes that the movements Dre is learning apply to life in general, and that serenity and maturity, not punches and power, are the true keys to mastering the martial arts. During one lesson in the Wudang Mountains, Dre notices a female kung fu practitioner (Michelle Yeoh, in an uncredited cameo[4]) apparently copying the movements of a cobra before her, but Han informs him that it was the cobra that was imitating the woman, as in a mirror reflection. Dre wants Han to teach him this technique, which includes linking Han’s hand and feet to Dre’s via bamboo shafts while practicing their forms, but Dre’s subsequent attempt to use this reflection technique on his mother is unsuccessful.

As Dre’s friendship with Mei Ying continues, she agrees to attend Dre’s tournament, as does Dre her upcoming recital. Dre persuades Mei Ying to cut school for a day of fun, but when she is nearly late for her violin recital, which has been rescheduled for that day, she tells him that her parents have deemed him a bad influence, and forbid her from spending any more time with him. Later, when Dre finds Mr. Han despondent, he learns that it is the anniversary of his wife and son’s deaths, which occurred years ago when he lost control of his car while arguing with his wife. Dre reminds Han that one of his lessons was in perseverance, and that Han needs to heal from his loss, and tries to help him do so. Han then assists Dre in reading a note, in Chinese, of apology to Mei Ying’s father, who, impressed, allows Mei to attend the tournament.

At the tournament, the under-confident Dre is slow to achieve parity with his opponents, but soon begins to beat them, and advances to the semifinals, as does Cheng, who violently finishes off his opponents. Dre eventually comes up against Liang, another of Master Li’s students, who is instructed by Master Li to break Dre’s leg. When Liang insists that he can beat Dre, Master Li sternly tells him that he doesn’t want him beaten, but broken. During the match, Liang delivers a devastating kick to Dre’s leg, along with a series of brutal follow-up punches. Although Liang is disqualified for his illegal strikes, Dre is incapacitated, which would allow Cheng to win by default.

Despite Han’s insistence that he has earned respect for his performance in the tournament, Dre convinces Han to use his fire cupping technique to mend his leg, in order to see the tournament to the end. Dre returns to the arena, where he confronts Cheng. Dre delivers impressive blows, but Cheng counters with a debilitating strike to Dre’s already injured leg. Dre struggles to get up, and adopts the one-legged form he first learned from the woman on the mountain, attempting to use the reflection technique to manipulate Cheng’s movements. Cheng charges Dre, but Dre flips, and catches Cheng with a kick to his head, winning the tournament, along with the respect of Cheng and his classmates, both for himself and Mr. Han.

The Expendables (2010)

The Expendables is a 2010 American ensemble action-war film written by David Callaham and Sylvester Stallone, and directed by Stallone. Filming began on March 28, 2009, in Rio de Janeiro, New Orleans, and Los Angeles, and the film was released on August 13, 2010.

The film is about a group of elite mercenaries, tasked with a mission to overthrow a Latin American dictator. It pays tribute to the blockbuster action films of the 1980s and early 1990s, and stars an array of action veterans from those decades, including Stallone, Dolph Lundgren, Mickey Rourke, Jet Li, Bruce Willis and Arnold Schwarzenegger (the latter two in cameo roles), as well as more recent stars such as Jason Statham, Terry Crews, Randy Couture, and Steve Austin.

Plot :

A group of elite mercenaries, the Expendables, are deployed to the Gulf of Aden off the coast of Somalia to halt local pirates from executing the hostages. The team consists of leader Barney Ross (Sylvester Stallone), former SAS soldier and blades specialist Lee Christmas (Jason Statham), martial artist Yin Yang (Jet Li), sniper Gunnar Jensen (Dolph Lundgren), weapons specialist Hale Caesar (Terry Crews) and demolitions expert Toll Road (Randy Couture). Jensen instigates a firefight, causing casualties for the pirates. Yang and Jensen fight over moral disagreements about hanging a pirate, with Ross finally intervening. As a result of his psychological problems, Ross reluctantly releases Jensen from the Expendables.

Ross and his rival mercenary leader Trench (Arnold Schwarzenegger), go to see Mr. Church (Bruce Willis) who names himself after the church they meet in. He offers them a mission in Vilena, a fictional island in the Gulf of Mexico, to overthrow a brutal dictator, General Garza (David Zayas). Busy with other things, Trench gives the contract to Ross. Christmas visits his girlfriend, Lacy (Charisma Carpenter), whom he discovers has left him for another man, Paul. Ross and Christmas do initial reconnaissance after meeting with their contact, Sandra (Gisele Itié), only for the mission to go awry. Ross learns that Garza is backed by ex-CIA agent James Munroe (Eric Roberts) and his henchmen Paine (Steve Austin) and The Brit (Gary Daniels), who manipulate and keep Garza in power by making his people fear him. Sandra is revealed to be Garza’s daughter. Ross decides to abort and causes casualties among the army as they escape. Meanwhile, Jensen approaches Garza and Munroe to help their side.

Christmas visits Lacy again to find that Paul has beaten her. Christmas defeats Paul and his friends, showing Lacy what he does for a living and winning her over. Ross, Christmas, and Yang deduce that Mr. Church is a member of the CIA and that the real target is Munroe, as the CIA could not kill one of their own. Mission coordinator and former teammate, Tool (Mickey Rourke) makes an emotional confession to Ross about letting a woman commit suicide during the Bosnian War. Hearing this, Ross decides to go back for Sandra. Yang tags along, and they are chased on the road by Jensen in an intense shootout. The pursuit ends in an abandoned warehouse, where Yang and Jensen fight a second time. Jensen attempts to impale Yang on a pipe, only for Ross to shoot Jensen. A wounded Jensen makes amends and gives the layout of Garza’s palace. Ross boards the plane with Yang and finds the rest of team, ready to aid their friend.

The Expendables infiltrate Garza’s compound. Christmas, Yang, Caesar, and Toll plant explosive charges throughout the site. When Garza has a change of heart after Munroe tortures his daughter, Munroe kills him. The entire team fights and shoots their way through Garza’s soldiers. Ross and Caesar manage to destroy the helicopter Munroe was to escape on. Christmas and Yang manage to kill The Brit while Toll kills Paine. Ross and Christmas catch up to Munroe and kill him, saving Sandra. Instead of taking the payment for the mission, Ross gives it to Sandra to restore Vilena. The team celebrates their victory at Tool’s tattoo parlor, with the reformed and recovering Jensen. Christmas and Tool challenge each other to a game of knife throwing and Christmas recites a poem about his respect for Tool, before throwing the knife perfectly in the center of the board.

Plot :

A group of professional thieves (Michael Ealy, Chris Brown, Hayden Christensen, Paul Walker, Idris Elba) who specialize in spectacular robberies, are pulled into one last job by a recently paroled cohort (T.I.) only to be pitted against a hard-boiled detective (Matt Dillon) and his partner (Jay Hernandez) who interrupt their heist.

Killers (2010)

Killers is a 2010 action comedy film starring Katherine Heigl and Ashton Kutcher. The film was released in the United States on June 4, 2010.

Plot :

After a break-up with a spontaneous boyfriend, an overly cautious Jen Kornfeldt (Katherine Heigl) travels to Nice, France with her parents (Tom Selleck and Catherine O’Hara). While going into an elevator to go to her hotel room, she sees Spencer (Ashton Kutcher). Spencer asks her to dinner and she accepts. The scene then changes to Spencer sneaking onto a boat, taking out a guard, then putting a time bomb on the bottom of a helicopter. Spencer then swims back and goes on the date with Jen.

After a night of drinking, Jen reveals that she’s not the spontaneous person she’s been pretending to be and in return Spencer bluntly tells her that he’s a contract killer, albeit unhappy about being one. Unfortunately she’s already passed out and hasn’t heard. In spite of this, Spencer decides that Jen’s the woman he’s been looking for and decides to marry her. When Spencer tells his boss Holbrook (Martin Mull) his plan, the response is the obvious: “You don’t just quit being a contract killer”. Spencer is defiant and goes ahead with his plan.

Despite asking Jen’s father for permission to marry her (and a mutual affinity for firearms), Spencer senses that Mr. Kornfeldt doesn’t really like him.

Fast forward to three years later, they’re settled into their new normal life. After Spencer surprises Jen with a remodeled office, she gives him a birthday surprise: tickets to Nice to celebrate his birthday and their three years. Because of the hitman connections to Nice, Spencer is less than enthusiastic. When her friends ask about his reaction, they take it as signs of that he might be getting bored and fill her head with doubts.

Meanwhile Spencer gets a postcard from his old boss and the ultimatum to take another job. While trying to refuse him long distance, Jen’s father shows up to take Spencer to dinner, so Spencer hangs up the phone, prompting a suspicion in Mr. Kornfeldt. This is fueled further when Jen’s dad see the postcard and quizzes him about the XOXX (hugs and kisses), being odd coming from a former boss.

Stopping home to change, Spencer finds that the dinner invite is just a detour to bring him to a surprise party. While Spencer navigates a ton of drunk friends, Jen’s friends continue to fill her head with doubts over Spencer’s lack of enthusiasm for the Nice trip. This is further irritated, when the following morning, despite her attempts to be physical with him, Spencer rushes Jen off on her business trip.

A little while later, Jen comes back (without having gone on her trip) to find Spencer being tossed around their house by Henry (Rob Riggle), Spencer’s friend and co-worker. Spencer screams for her to get his gun (of which she was unaware) and she shoots the attacker in the arm. While interrogating the attacker, he reveals that there is a $20 Million USD dollar bounty on Spencer’s head. An unidentified sniper takes pot shots at them, and Spencer and Jen flee.

After escaping, they go to a hotel room where Spencer’s old boss is staying, but find that someone has already killed him by two shots to the heart and one to the head. Jen demands that they go to her dad for help, but Spence disagrees. In the middle of their argument Jen vomits, and declares that she might be pregnant.

Heading back to his office for Jen to take a pregnancy test, Spencer is attacked by his secretary and realizes that there are others who know about the contract. Jen then reveals that she is pregnant and is leaving Spencer.

Left alone, Spencer is attacked by the UPS driver, who is killed by Olivia (Lisa Ann Walter), Henry’s wife and another assassin vying for the contract. She then attacks Spencer and is killed by Jen, who came to rescue him. The two discuss their possible future and return to their neighborhood, which is holding its annual block party. When they first arrive they are attacked by two assassins. They escape and head to the block party. As they walk through the block party they receive many suspicious looks from neighbours. They enter their house to retrieve guns and their passports. Spencer is grabbing the guns when he is attacked by two assassins who he eventually kills.

Meanwhile, one assassin Kristen (Casey Wilson), one of Jen’s best friends, holds Jen’s mother as a hostage in a Mexican standoff with Jen. Jen’s father arrives and kills the assassin. He then explains that he was the one who put out the bounty on Spencer. He knew of Spencer’s previous work, and hired the neighbors and co-workers 3 years before in case Spencer started working for the his old boss again, who Jen’s father says had “gone dirty.” After seeing the postcard from Holbrook in Spencer’s office, he came to the conclusion that Spencer had re-accepted his old job and “activated” the assassins. He reveals that he had been a contract killer as well, and that he was actually the target Spencer was supposed to kill in Nice three years earlier.

Wanting to prove that he really did get out of the business and had no desire to kill her father, Spencer drops his gun. Jen, now convinced, turns on her father and says, “So you’re not really a pilot? I’ve been dodging bullets all day because of you and that’s not good for the baby.” Realizing that he will be a grandfather, Jen’s father also puts down his gun and the family makes peace. The movie ends showing Spencer and Jen’s father working on some wires near Spencer and Jen’s baby’s crib. Spencer and Jen then leave to let Jen’s mom and dad babysit. They all leave the room and when they close the doors lasers turn on to protect the baby.

The Losers (2010)

The Losers is a 2010 American action film adaptation of Vertigo comic book series of the same name. Directed by Sylvain White, the film features an ensemble cast that includes Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Zoe Saldana and Chris Evans.

Plot :

Clay, Jensen, Roque, Pooch and Cougar are members of an elite United States Special Forces team sent into the Bolivian jungle on a search and destroy mission. They attempt to abort the mission when they see children are being used as drug mules. The team, find themselves the target of a betrayal instigated from inside by a powerful enemy known only as Max. With an air strike minutes away the team breach the compound and rescue the children. The team allow the children to be airlifted to safety aboard a waiting helicopter but it is destroyed by a missile intended for them. Presumed dead and without passports or money the team are stuck in Bolivia. The group makes plans to even the score when they’re joined by the mysterious Aisha, a beautiful operative with rather sly moves. Together they track and follow the ruthless and heavily armed and guarded Max to foil his plans of transforming the world as we know it into a new high-tech global battleground. Aisha agrees to smuggle the men back into the United States if they agree to hunt down and kill Max in what she describes as essentially a suicide mission. An operation to intercept and capture Max in Miami is planned. The mission goes well but instead of Max they only retrieve a hard drive containing valuables Max needs to make his next arms deal. Even with this they can’t find him because they do not have the code needed to get into the drive.

Max intends to purchase the latest high tech weapon, an environmentally friendly bomb with the power of a nuclear weapon but with no contamination or fall-out. He intends to use it to start a war for the benefit of the United States of America.

The story centers on a bounty hunter (Butler) hired to retrieve his ex-wife (Aniston), who has skipped bail. The film will be released in the United Kingdom and United States on March 19, 2010.

Plot :

The film stars Gerard Butler as struggling bounty hunter Milo and Jennifer Aniston as his bail-jumping ex-wife Nicole. Much to his glee, Milo learns that Nicole is his next target and begins his assignment with enthusiasm. However, Nicole is determined to escape from Milo’s custody once he has found her.

Diary of a Wimpy Kid is a 2010 American live-action/animated film directed by Thor Freudenthal and based on the best-selling first book in the illustrated novel series of the same title by Jeff Kinney. The movie is rated PG for some rude humor and language.

The film stars Zachary Gordon, Robert Capron, Steve Zahn, Rachael Harris, Devon Bostick, Conner and Owen Fielding, and Chloë Moretz. The film is scheduled for release on March 19, 2010.

Plot :

A film adaptation of the book, the film chronicles the adventures of middle school student Greg Heffley (Zachary Gordon) and his best friend Rowley Jefferson (Robert Capron) over the course of an academic year, as told through Greg’s journal and hand-drawn cartoons. The two best friends also have to get through some obstacles to get through middle school, such as surviving their weird neighborhood kid Fregley (Grayson Russell), having to wrestle a very tough girl named Patty Farrell (Laine MacNeil), having to play outdoor Phys Ed games without shirts on, avoiding being killed by Greg’s older brother, Rodrick (Devon Bostick), getting very embarrassed by Greg’s mother, Susan (Rachael Harris), and, worst of all, trying to avoid getting the infamous cheese touch, which was started by Darren Walsh (Harrison Houde), and Greg would have gotten it if it weren’t for Chirag Gupta (Karan Brar).

Cast :

* Zachary Gordon as Greg Heffley, the protagonist and narrator. He is bullied by other kids at school and by Rodrick. He thinks that middle school is the worst idea ever invented.
* Robert Capron as Rowley Jefferson, Greg’s friend. He is not as socially awkward as he is in the books, but he does cause some embarrassing moments, such as telling Bryce Anderson that he has a “cute butt”.
* Rachael Harris as Susan Heffley, Greg’s mother. Like in the books, she sometimes makes Greg look like a wimp.
* Steve Zahn as Frank Heffley, Greg’s father.
* Devon Bostick as Rodrick Heffley, Greg’s older brother. Like his character in the books, his advice is often unhelpful, such as telling Greg not to talk to anyone or sit down next to anyone if he (Greg) is going to be able to survive middle school. He also calls Rowley on one occasion a “baby hippo”.
* Connor and Owen Fielding as Manny, Greg’s annoying little brother.
* Chloë Moretz as Angie, Greg’s classmate.
* Karan Brar as Chirag Gupta, Greg’s friend.
* Grayson Russell as Fregley, Greg’s weird classmate.
* Alex Ferris as Collin Lee, one of Greg’s classmates.
