Plot :

Brooklyn’s Finest takes place within the notoriously rough Brownsville section of the city and especially within the Van Dyke housing projects in the NYPD’s sixty-fifth precinct. Three policemen struggle with the sometimes fine line between right and wrong. Eddie (Richard Gere) is a week from retirement after twenty-two years of less-than-exemplary service to the force when he’s assigned to oversee rookies in the tough neighborhoods. His life in shambles, Eddie is barely hanging on, swilling whiskey in the morning to get out of bed. His only friend is the prostitute he frequents.

Tango (Don Cheadle) is an undercover cop working the drug beat. But he tires of the kind of attention that a black man in a black car attracts, and he’s been begging for a promotion and a desk job for years. He’s finally offered a way out and it means betraying a close friend Caz, a known criminal (Wesley Snipes) recently released from federal prison.

Sal (Ethan Hawke), desperate for money to feed and house his rapidly growing family, has started pocketing the money left on the table during drug raids. Deeply religious, he finds that he’s in the bad place of trying to reconcile his misdeeds with his needs. The mold in the walls of his home is making his wife (Lili Taylor) ill and endangering the life of his unborn twins. And the down payment on his coveted new house is past due.

Federal Agent Smith (Ellen Barkin) instructs Tango to set-up the drug deal that will assure Caz’s arrest and return to federal prison. Eddie’s first rookie assignment (Logan Marshall-Green) gets himself killed on his second day on the force when he requests to be assigned to work with another officer. Sal’s wife goes into the hospital after an asthma attack brought on my the mold in their home. Eddie’s second rookie assignment (Jesse Williams) shoots a petty drug dealer leaving the young man deaf and the NYPD facing a public relations nightmare.

When Tango goes to warn Caz to abort their upcoming drug deal, they are ambushed and Caz is shot dead under orders from Red (Michael K. Williams), a gangster Caz had humiliated earlier in a rooftop incident. Eddie turns in his badge and visits his regular hooker, Chantal (Shannon Kane) who does not want to change her life by moving with him to Connecticut. After Agent Smith remarks that Caz’s death is better than his arrest, Tango lunges at her, but is restrained by fellow agents. Tango determines to avenge Caz’s death now that he knows Red ordered the hit.

That night within the Van Dyke housing projects, Eddie, Tango, and Sal converge for very different reasons. Eddie no longer feeling suicidal rescues a missing person (Sarah Thompson) from a basement operated sex-slave dungeon. Tango gets his vengeance from Red, but then is mistaken for a gangster and is shot dead by Sal’s friend and partner Ronny Rosario (Brian F. O’Byrne). Rosario’s mission was to follow and stop Sal from stealing more drug money from an informant living within the Van Dyke housing projects. Only after shooting and killing Tango does Rosario realize he’s shot another law officer.

The closing scene shows Eddie having rescued the missing person, and an assortment of other women, and in the process having redeemed himself from the reputation he earned within the precinct of being a failure as an officer.

Plot :

Sentenced to six years in prison, young man Malik El Djebena (Tahar Rahim) is alone in the world and can neither read nor write. On his arrival at the prison he falls under the sway of a Corsican Mafia group, led by Luciani, who enforce their rule in the prison. Malik toughens himself and wins the confidence of the Corsican group. He follows Luciani’s orders to kill prisoner Reyeb. Luciani arranges 12-hour leaves for Malik, in which Luciani sends him on missions, including murder. Malik learns how to read and write, and uses all his intelligence to discreetly develop his own network. His power grows and finally he is no longer on Luciani’s side.

Plot :

At a young age, Colin Sullivan (Damon) is introduced to organized crime through Irish mobster Frank Costello (Nicholson) who grooms him along with other youths in the Irish neighborhood of Southie (South Boston). Turning into a father figure to Sullivan, Costello trains him to become his mole inside the Massachusetts State Police. Performing exceptionally while helping Costello remove his underworld enemies, Sullivan is accepted into the Special Investigation Unit (SIU), which focuses on organized crime. Before he graduates from the Police Academy, Billy Costigan (DiCaprio) is asked by Captain Queenan (Sheen) and the abusive Staff Sergeant Dignam (Wahlberg) to become an undercover agent, as his childhood spent wandering between two Boston neighborhoods and his family ties to organized crime make him a perfect infiltrator. He agrees to drop out of the academy and does time in prison on a phony assault charge to up his credibility as a criminal.

As both men infiltrate their respective organizations, Sullivan begins a romance with psychiatrist Madolyn Madden (Farmiga). Costigan sees Madolyn as part of his probation and also develops a relationship with her. After Costello barely escapes a sting operation, both moles become aware of the other’s existence (though not his identity). Sullivan is assigned to find the “rat” in SIU and asks Costello for his crew’s personal information to allow him to determine who is the informer within Costello’s crew. Costigan follows Costello into a movie theater where Costello gives Sullivan an envelope with the details of his crew. Costigan then chases Sullivan through Boston’s Chinatown, during which Sullivan stabs an innocent bystander. When it is all over, both men still do not know each other’s true identity. Sullivan then has Queenan tailed as he meets Costigan in an abandoned building. Costello sends his men in and Queenan distracts them to let Costigan escape. For this he pays with his life as he is thrown from the roof and dies at the feet of Costigan. When the mobsters escape, Costigan pretends he has come to rejoin them. The trailing state troopers open fire on Costello’s crew, which causes casualties on both sides. Later, at one of Costello’s safe houses, Delahunt (one of Costello’s enforcers) reveals to Costigan that he is aware of his true identity just before he dies from his gunshot wounds.

His actions now under scrutiny, Sullivan is attacked by a suspicious Dignam because of Queenan’s death and got subsequently placed on administrative leave. Using Queenan’s bloodstained phone, Sullivan reaches Costigan, who refuses to abort his mission. Sullivan learns of Costello’s role as an informant for the FBI from Queenan’s diary, causing him to worry about his double identity being revealed. With Costigan’s help, Costello is tracked to a cocaine drop-off, where he and his crew become trapped in a gunfight with police, resulting in most of the mobsters being killed. As the wounded Costello attempts an escape he is confronted by Sullivan. Costello admits he is an occasional FBI mole and tries to shoot Sullivan. Sullivan fires first, killing Costello. With Costello dead, Sullivan is applauded for his actions. In good faith, Costigan comes to him for restoration of his true identity but notices the envelope containing the details of Costello’s men on Sullivan’s desk and flees from the building. Knowing he has been found out, Sullivan erases all records of Costigan as a trooper from the police agency’s computer system.

Costigan leaves an envelope in the care of Madolyn, with whom he has had a love affair but who now lives with Sullivan. Costigan sends Sullivan an audio CD with a note requesting Sullivan to contact him. However, Madolyn listens to the CD first and hears Sullivan and Costello’s taped conversations. Sullivan walks in on her and tries to assuage her suspicions. He contacts Costigan, who reveals that he is in possession of recordings by Costello that would implicate Sullivan as a rat in the police department. They agree to meet at the empty building where Queenan died. Costigan surprises Sullivan, holding him at gunpoint, intent on arresting him. Officer Brown, who is both Sullivan’s colleague and an academy friend of Costigan, appears and draws his gun on Costigan. Using Sullivan as a shield, Costigan gets into the elevator. As it reaches the ground floor, Costigan is immediately shot in the head by Sullivan’s other colleague Barrigan. Brown appears on the scene but is shot and killed by Barrigan, who reveals himself as Costello’s second mole. Not wanting any loose ends, Sullivan shoots and kills Barrigan. Back at police headquarters, Sullivan blames all mole activity on Barrigan and has Costigan posthumously rewarded with the Medal of Merit.

At Costigan’s funeral, a pregnant Madolyn is seen crying. She walks right past Sullivan after the service (in a moment reminiscent of the final scene of The Third Man). Some time later, in the final scene, Sullivan comes home with a bag of groceries. Instead of Madolyn, Dignam is waiting for him. Dignam shoots Sullivan in the head and then calmly exits the apartment, presumably leaving behind no incriminating evidence (he wears a zipped up track suit with bags over his shoes and also wears surgical gloves). A rat can be seen crawling on the windowsill.

The film is primarily based on three of Miller’s works: The Hard Goodbye, about a man who embarks on a brutal rampage in search of his one-time sweetheart’s killer; The Big Fat Kill, which focuses on a street war between a group of prostitutes and a group of mercenaries; and That Yellow Bastard, which follows an aging police officer who protects a young woman from a grotesquely disfigured serial killer. The movie stars Bruce Willis, Alexis Bledel, Mickey Rourke, Jessica Alba, Clive Owen, Michael Clarke Duncan, Rosario Dawson, Benicio del Toro, Michael Madsen, Nick Stahl, Powers Boothe, Josh Hartnett, Jaime King, Brittany Murphy, Elijah Wood and Rutger Hauer, among others.

Plot :

The Customer Is Always Right

In a penthouse on the roof of a skyscraper overlooking Basin City, a fancy party is in progress. A woman (Marley Shelton), dressed in a red evening gown, is alone on the balcony. A man (Josh Hartnett), who is narrating, walks up behind her and offers her a cigarette. They exchange some small talk; he tells her that he sees in her eyes the “crazy calm” of someone who is tired of running, but doesn’t want to face her problems alone. He tells her that he will save her, and take her far away. They kiss, he says he loves her, and then he shoots her. She dies in his arms. He says that he’ll never know what she was running from, but will “cash her check in the morning.”

In the DVD commentary, Frank Miller explains that the victim in this story (the Customer of the title) is committing suicide: the unnamed woman had courted a mobster, and when she tried to break it off, he said that he would kill her in the most terrible way possible. She then used her connections to hire a hit-man (known as the Salesman) to provide her with quick death.

That Yellow Bastard (Part 1)

On the docks of Sin City, aging police officer John Hartigan (Bruce Willis) is attempting to stop serial child-killer Roark Junior (Nick Stahl) from raping and killing eleven-year-old Nancy Callahan (Makenzie Vega). Junior is the son of the powerful Senator Roark (Powers Boothe), who has paid off the Basin City police to cover up his son’s crimes, including Hartigan’s partner Bob (Michael Madsen). Bob tries to convince Hartigan to walk away, and appears to succeed, but Hartigan sucker-punches him, knocking him out cold. Hartigan then makes his way into a warehouse, knocking unconscious two local criminals. Junior is inside with the frightened Nancy and two armed henchmen, who are making sure that Junior and Nancy “get along” before leaving them alone. Hartigan shoots and kills the henchmen, but Junior shoots Hartigan in the shoulder, grabs Nancy and runs out to the docks. Hartigan catches up to Junior and shoots off his ear, causing him to drop Nancy. Hartigan then asks Nancy to shut her eyes, he then shoots off Junior’s hand and genitals, before being shot in the back several times by Bob, who has recovered. Hartigan tells little Nancy to run away, but Bob warns the already scared and shocked Nancy to not listen to Hartigan and not to run and stay where she is. Then Bob tells Hartigan to stay down, but Hartigan pulls his reserve gun, provoking Bob to shoot him several more times. As the sirens approach, little Nancy goes over and lies down in Hartigan’s lap for protection, while Hartigan who has lost a lot of blood and can hardly keep conscious, passes out knowing that Nancy is safe, justifying himself with the words “An old man dies, a little girl lives. Fair trade.”

The Hard Goodbye

After a night of lovemaking, Marv (Mickey Rourke) awakens to find Goldie (Jaime King) murdered. The police arrive, and he flees the frame-up, vowing to avenge Goldie’s death. He turns to Lucille (Carla Gugino), his lesbian parole officer, who patches his wounds and unsuccessfully warns him to give up on this mission. Marv heads to Kadie’s Bar in search of information, where he interrogates and kills two hitmen sent after him. Marv then shakes down various informants, working his way up to a corrupt priest (Frank Miller), who reveals that a member of the Roark family was behind Goldie’s murder. Marv kills the priest, but is then attacked and shot at by a woman with a strong resemblance to Goldie. Marv, recognizing that he has not taken his medication for his “condition” for a long time, considers her to be a hallucination.

Marv arrives at the Roark family farm, where he is subdued by the silent stalker who killed Goldie without waking him. He awakens in the basement, with the heads of the stalker’s past victims and Lucille,stripped naked, who was captured and forced to watch the killer eat her hand when she decided to look into Marv’s story. While wiggling her toes, she reveals to Marv that the killer is a cannibal. He learns that the killer’s name is Kevin (Elijah Wood) and escapes, but Lucille surrenders to an arriving squad of police officers, who gun her down. Enraged, Marv kills them all, hearing from their leader that Cardinal Patrick Henry Roark (Rutger Hauer) arranged for Goldie’s murder.

Marv goes to Old Town, Sin City’s red light district, seeking confirmation of the killer’s identity. He is captured by the women. They tie him to a chair and Goldie’s look-alike (her twin sister Wendy) beats him. He manages to convince her that he didn’t kill Goldie. Convinced, she and Marv arm themselves and return to the farm. Marv dismembers and kills Kevin, taking the head to Cardinal Roark, who confesses his part in the murders: Kevin was the cardinal’s ward and had begun killing and eating prostitutes to “swallow their souls”, and the cardinal joined in; when Goldie began investigating, Roark had her killed. Marv kills the cardinal but is shot by his guards.

Marv is taken to a hospital (an act he calls a waste of time, figuring that he’ll be killed anyway). Police try to beat a confession out of him, which only amuses him. Ultimately, the police threaten to kill Marv’s mother if he doesn’t play along. He confesses to killing not only Roark and Kevin, but their victims as well, and is sentenced to death. He is visited on death row by Wendy, who thanks him for avenging her sister and spends the night with him, telling him he can call her “Goldie.” Marv is executed the next day; He survives the first jolt of electricity, his final words being “Is that the best you can do, you pansies?” He finally dies after a second jolt.

The Big Fat Kill

Shellie (Brittany Murphy), a barmaid from Kadie’s, is being harassed by her abusive ex-boyfriend Jackie Boy (Benicio del Toro). Her current boyfriend Dwight (Clive Owen) is disgusted with his brutish rival. He shoves Jackie Boy’s head into a urine-filled toilet bowl, warning him to leave Shellie alone. Jackie Boy flees with his friends, heading to Old Town to cause further trouble. Dwight follows and sees them harass young prostitute Becky (Alexis Bledel). Also watching is Gail (Rosario Dawson), one of the head prostitutes and Dwight’s on-and-off lover.

When Jackie Boy threatens Becky with a gun, martial arts expert Miho (Devon Aoki) sweeps down, severing Jackie Boy’s hand and killing his friends. As it becomes apparent Jackie Boy will not die quickly, Dwight asks Miho to finish him. Miho nearly severs his head, making “a Pez dispenser out of him.” As the prostitutes collect the dead men’s money, they realize Jackie Boy is actually well-respected police officer Lieutenant “Iron Jack” Jack Rafferty. If the circumstances of his death are discovered, they spell a certain end to the truce between the police and prostitutes, and a war against Old Town will be inevitable.

Dwight agrees to take the corpses to the local tar pit, while a traumatized Becky returns home. On the way, Dwight has a hallucinatory conversation with Jackie Boy’s corpse, who taunts him as he is chased by a cop. Dwight talks his way out of the situation and arrives at the tar pit, where he is shot by Irish mercenaries. Meanwhile, head mercenary Manute (Michael Clarke Duncan) arrives in Old Town and kidnaps Gail, explaining that an informant has revealed everything and that mob boss Wallenquist’s men are moving to invade Old Town.

Dwight survives the mercenary’s bullet, which was stopped by Lt. Rafferty’s badge. He kills several mercenaries but is knocked into the tar by a grenade; Dwight nearly drowns before Miho saves him. The other mercenaries escape with Jackie Boy’s severed head. Dwight and Miho engage them in a violent shoot-out that ends with the death of both mercenaries and the retrieval of Jackie Boy’s head. They return to Old Town.

Gail’s hands and barefeet have been tied to a chair. As she is being tortured, she learns that Becky was the traitor, informing the mercenaries out of fear and greed. Becky taunts the bound Gail. Manute receives a letter from Dwight via an arrow from Miho, offering Jackie Boy’s head in exchange for Gail. They meet in the alley, where the trade is made, though the mercenaries plan to kill them anyway. Dwight suddenly activates a grenade he had placed in Jackie Boy’s Head, completely destroying it and any evidence that could have been taken to the cops. The other prostitutes of Old Town then reveal themselves on the rooftops and gun down the mercenaries. Amidst the gunfire, an injured Becky

That Yellow Bastard (Part 2)

Hartigan is recovering in a hospital. Senator Roark informs him that Junior is in a coma and all plans for the Roark legacy are now in serious jeopardy. Senator Roark reveals that Hartigan will be framed for Junior’s crimes and serve the resultant jail term. Additionally, if Hartigan tells anyone the truth, they will die. A grateful Nancy visits to thank him, promising to write letters every week while he is in prison.

Hartigan goes to jail, knowing it is the only way to protect his wife and Nancy, although he refuses to officially confess to the crimes. He receives a weekly letter from Nancy as promised. After eight years, the letters stop. Hartigan receives a severed finger instead. Realizing Nancy could have been kidnapped, Hartigan finally confesses to all charges, knowing this will lead to a parole. He reunites with his old partner, Bob, who has come to regret his actions. Bob tells him that Hartigan’s wife has remarried. Unknowingly being stalked by a deformed, yellow-skinned man, Hartigan searches for Nancy, eventually finding her at Kadie’s Bar, where she has become a 19-year-old erotic dancer (Jessica Alba).

Realizing that the severed finger was a fake and that he was set up to lead the yellow man to Nancy, he tries to leave unnoticed. Nancy, however, jumps into his arms and kisses him passionately. Now noticed by the yellow man, they escape in Nancy’s car. The yellow man follows and Hartigan shoots him in the neck. Hartigan turns back to confirm the kill, but the yellow man hides in the back of Nancy’s car. At a hotel, Nancy reveals that she is in love with Hartigan and tries to seduce him. Hartigan reminds himself that he is old enough to be her grandfather. The deformed man returns and attacks again, revealing himself as Junior Roark, although Hartigan now refers to him as the Yellow Bastard.

Disfigured by years of surgery necessary to regenerate his missing body parts, the Yellow Bastard proceeds to hang Hartigan and leave him for dead. Nancy is taken to the Roark farm to be raped and killed. Hartigan escapes and tracks the Yellow Bastard to the farm, where he has whipped Nancy and is about to attack her with his knife. Hartigan kills the guards. He then corners the Yellow Bastard and fakes a heart attack to fool him into letting go of Nancy, giving Hartigan a chance to stick a knife in his stomach, castrate him again (this time with his bare hands), and beat him to death.

Hartigan tells Nancy his plan to reveal Senator Roark’s corruption to the police and to finally bring down organized crime in Sin City. They kiss. Knowing that the Senator would never stop hunting them, Hartigan commits suicide in order to ensure Nancy’s safety once and for all. He justifies himself with the words: “An old man dies, a young woman lives; fair trade.”

Epilogue

An injured Becky, having survived the crossfire, departs from a hospital, talking on a cell phone with her mother. Upon entering the elevator she encounters the Salesman from the prologue. He offers Becky a cigarette, implying that he is about to kill her. He then thinks to himself: “Turn the right corner in Sin City and you can find anything. Anything.”

Plot :

The film begins with a hostage situation in Los Angeles (loosely based on the 1997 North Hollywood shootout). Officer Jim Street (Farrell), a hot-shot cop from the Los Angeles Police Department and his SWAT team are sent to stop a gang of robbers who have taken over a bank. His high-tempered partner and close friend Brian Gamble (Jeremy Renner) disobeys an order, and wounds a hostage. Gamble and Street are demoted by Captain Fuller (Larry Poindexter), the commander of LAPD’s Metropolitan Division, who is portrayed as a fussy martinet. Gamble quits following arguments with Fuller and Street, the latter of whom is taken off the SWAT team and sent to work in the “gun cage,” where he looks after gear and weapons.

The Chief of Police calls on Sergeant Dan “Hondo” Harrelson (Jackson) to help re-organize the SWAT division. Hondo is transferred in, and soon puts together a diverse team, including himself, Street, Chris Sánchez (Rodriguez), Deacon Kaye (LL Cool J), T.J. McCabe (Josh Charles), and Michael Boxer (Brian Van Holt). The team trains together and develops bonds of friendship.

Meanwhile, a drug lord by the name of Alex Montel (Olivier Martinez) kills his father and uncle for control of the family‘s crime empire. The L.A.P.D. stop Montel for a broken taillight, detain him, and learn through Interpol he is an international fugitive. As they are transferring him, his associates, dressed as LAPD officers, assault the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department bus Montel is on, in an attempt to free him. Hondo’s SWAT team foils the assault. As Montel is being brought into the police station in front of a group of reporters, he yells to them, “I will give one hundred million dollars to whoever gets me out of here.”

The L.A.P.D. makes plans to transfer Montel into federal custody. They plan to fly him away, but a mysterious attacker (later revealed to be Gamble) shoots down the helicopter. The police next send out a large convoy, which is attacked by gang members. It turns out to be a decoy, and Hondo’s team has spirited Montel away in two S.U.V.s. However, T.J. has been plotting with Gamble, and the two succeed in taking Montel from the other officers. Hondo and the rest give chase, and there is a final fierce battle, Gamble’s group against the SWAT officers. Hondo’s team is victorious. T.J. kills himself rather than be captured, and there is a vicious hand to hand fight between Street and Gamble, with Street emerging the eventual victor when he kicks Gamble under the wheels of a passing train, killing him. The SWAT team delivers Montel to a federal prison to await trial.

Premise :

Ray Tierney (Norton) is a New York City police officer, who is part of a multi-generational police family. Ray investigates a troublesome case that involves his older brother and brother-in-law, compelling the family to choose sides between their blood and the New York Police Department.

Plot :

Four cops down: two dead, two likely. An NYPD drug bust has gone horribly wrong, and Detective Ray Tierney heads the investigating task force. He already has ties to the case. His brother was commander of the ambushed officers. His brother-in-law, a fellow officer, often partnered with them. The more Ray uncovers, the more those family ties are tested. And the more the fraternal order starts to fray.

Premise :

The Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call: New Orleans draws elements from Abel Ferrara’s 1992 film Bad Lieutenant, which featured a crooked cop (Harvey Keitel) who is a drug addict and takes sexual favors as bribes.

The main character is Terrence McDonagh, a New Orleans Police sergeant, who starts out as a good cop, receiving a medal and a promotion to lieutenant for heroism during Hurricane Katrina. During his heroic act, McDonagh injures his back and later becomes addicted to prescription pain medication. McDonagh struggles with addictions and finds himself involved with drug dealer Big Fate, who is suspected of murdering a family of African immigrants.
