Plot :

A fisherman, Spyros, finds a coffin adrift in the sea, discovering the baby Perseus and his dead mother, Danaë, inside. Spyros decides to raise Perseus as his own. Years later, Perseus and his family are fishing when they witness a group of soldiers from Argos destroying a statue of Zeus and declaring war on the gods. Hades commands harpies to massacre the soldiers, then destroys the boat Perseus and his family are on. Perseus fails to save his family and passes out on driftwood. The surviving soldiers take him back to Argos.

During a feast for the returning soldiers King Cepheus and Queen Cassiopeia of Argos compare themselves and their daughter, Andromeda, to the gods. Hades appears and kills the remaining soldiers but Perseus is unaffected. Hades realizes Perseus is a demigod and reveals Zeus is his father. Hades kills the queen, and threatens that if Princess Andromeda is not sacrificed to the Kraken, Argos will be destroyed.

The king seeks the help of Perseus. Perseus embarks to find the Stygian Witches. Hades enlists Acrisius, the man who was married to Danaë when Zeus impregnated her with Perseus. It was Acrisius who had set Danaë and the baby Perseus adrift in their coffin. Hades imbues him with powers to aid him in killing Perseus, and Acrisius takes the name of Calibos. Calibos attacks the group led by Perseus. They are saved by Djinn, sand-demons with magical powers. Perseus and the Djinn agree to cooperate.

At the Garden of Stygia, the three Stygian Witches tell Perseus that the head of Medusa could kill the Kraken, but that Perseus will die in the process. After leaving the witches, Perseus talks to Zeus who offers to make Perseus a god. He refuses. Zeus gives him instead a golden drachma. Perseus uses the coin to bribe Charon (Ferrier of the dead) for passage into the Underworld and enters Medusa’s lair. Draco, one of the soldiers with Perseus, allows himself to be turned to stone to give Perseus a clear shot at Medusa’s head. Perseus kills Medusa, but Calibos kills Io. Perseus kills Calibos, turning him back into Acrisius in human form. Perseus rides Pegasus back to Argos where the Kraken is destroying the city.

Hades hopes the destruction of Argos will give him enough power to overthrow the other Olympians. Zeus attempts to banish Hades back to the underworld. Hades quickly overpowers him but an injured Zeus reveals that Perseus lives. Hades is enraged and leaves to oversee the Kraken’s attack and ensure his victory.

Perseus defeats the creatures sent by Hades and uses the head to turn the Kraken to stone. Hades boasts that he cannot die because he is immortal; but Perseus throws his sword, charged with a bolt of lightning from Zeus. This banishes Hades to the Underworld. Perseus saves Andromeda, but refuses to become king of Argos.

Zeus offers to make Perseus a god on Olympus, but he refuses. Zeus notes that Hades will return one day for revenge when mankind is in fear. Since Perseus intent to stay on Earth, Zeus resurrects Io and the two embrace while Pegasus flies above them.

Plot :

A teenager named Percy Jackson (Logan Lerman) discovers that he’s the demigod son of the Greek god, Poseidon. (Kevin McKidd). He embarks on a journey across modern-day America with his friends Annabeth Chase (Alexandra Daddario), the demigod daughter of Athena, and Grover Underwood (Brandon T. Jackson), a satyr, to save his mother (Catherine Keener), return Zeus’ (Sean Bean) stolen lightning bolt, and prevent a war between the gods.

The film is loosely inspired by the events of 5th century European history, notably the collapse of the Western Roman Empire under its last Emperor, Romulus Augustus. This is coupled with other facts and legends from the history of Britain and fantastic elements from the legend of King Arthur to provide a basis for the Arthurian legend.

Plot :

The film is narrated by Ambrosinus, native to Britain, who knows of a legend concerning the sword of Julius Caesar, which was hidden away from evil men. It begins shortly before the coronation of Romulus as Emperor in 460.

Having traveled through much of the known world in search of Caesar’s sword, Ambrosinus has then become Romulus’s tutor. A Druid and part of a secret brotherhood protecting the sword, he at times gives the impression he is a magician, but his “magic” is just trickery. Romulus’s father Orestes rules Rome but is not Emperor himself.

On the day before the coronation, Odoacer, commander of the barbarian Goths allied with Rome, demands a third of Italy from Orestes, but is rebuffed. The same day, Romulus meets the general of the Nova Invicta Legion, Aurelianus Caius Antonius, called “Aurelius”.

The night after Romulus is crowned, Rome is attacked by the Goths. Most of Aurelius’s men, pledged to protect the emperor, are killed, though Aurelius is only stunned and left for dead. Orestes and his wife are killed by Odoacer’s lieutenant Wulfila, who captures Romulus.

Next day, Odoacer, now ruler of the Western Empire, plans to have Romulus killed. However, Ambrosinus convinces Odoacer to spare the boy. Instead, Romulus is exiled to Capri along with Ambrosinus, guarded by Wulfila and his men. His prison is a villa constructed more than four centuries earlier by the emperor Tiberius.

With Ambrosinus’s help, Romulus discovers a hidden chamber within the villa. He comes across a statue of Caesar holding the fabled sword, forged by a Chalybian smith after his military campaigns in Britain. Writing near the statue’s feet proclaims the sword was made for “he who is destined to rule”. This is interpreted as a prophecy by various characters, and Romulus keeps the weapon.

The two are rescued from Capri by the loyal Aurelius and three surviving legionaries, accompanied by a female agent of the Eastern Roman Empire – a Keralite warrior named Mira (trained in the martial art of Kalarippayattu). They take Romulus to a seaport where the Eastern Roman Empire’s emissary (whom Mira works for) and the senator Nestor have promised safe passage to Constantinople. However, they barely escape after they learn the Senate and the Eastern Empire have betrayed them and sided with Odoacer.

Ambrosinus persuades Romulus to seek refuge in Britain, where the Ninth Legion (called the Dragon Legion) may remain loyal, being far from the events. They are followed by Wulfila and his men; the Goth covets Caesar’s sword after learning the prophecy. Crossing the Alps and the English Channel, the party travels to Hadrian’s Wall and initially find no evidence of the legion until a farmer approaches and reveals he was its commander. With the collapse of Roman support of Britain, the legion had decided to disband and settle as farmers. They also did not want to antagonize the powerful warlord Vortgyn.

Vortgyn also desires the sword of Caesar as he aspires to rule the whole of Britain. It is revealed that Vortgyn and Ambrosinus are old enemies. After meeting with the Goths, Vortgyn decides to either capture or kill Romulus as a gesture to Odoacer. Aurelius, wielding Caesar’s sword, leads a few supporters against Vortgyn’s forces at Hadrian’s Wall. The battle appears hopeless until the rest of the Ninth Legion, having taken up their old Roman arms and uniforms, appear and turn the tide. The two warring sides cease their hostilities when Ambrosinus confronts and burns Vortgyn alive at a tree-sanctuary of his secret brotherhood near the battlefield. Romulus kills Wulfila with Caesar’s sword, avenging his parents. He tells Aurelius that he fought like a dragon, whereupon Aurelius replies that Romulus fought like the son of a dragon.

Repulsed by the deaths in the battle, Romulus heaves away his sword which remarkably pierces a large rock and becomes lodged there. Many years later, Ambrosinus, now known as Merlin, takes a young boy to the battlefield to describe the now legendary events. Merlin, who has visibly aged little since the battle, says that Aurelius married Mira and raised Romulus as their own son, and Romulus became a wise ruler and adopted the name “Pendragon”. The boy, Arthur, recognizes Romulus as his father.

With a final parting scene, the sword of Julius Caesar is shown embeded in the stone, with moss growing on the blade, covering the original inscription, leaving only the Latin letters which, when read as a single word, read Excalibur.

Originally scheduled for release on November 13, 2009, it was currently slated for a mid-January release in 2010 to avoid competition with the studio’s other film, Fantastic Mr. Fox.

Plot :

Dwayne Johnson is “The Tooth Fairy”, also known as Derek Thompson, a hard-charging minor league hockey player whose nickname comes from his habit of separating opposing players from their bicuspids. When Derek discourages a youngster’s hopes, he’s sentenced to one week’s hard labor as a “real” tooth fairy, complete with the requisite tutu, wings, and magic wand. At first, Derek “can’t handle the tooth”—bumbling and stumbling as he tries to furtively wing his way through strangers’ homes…doing what tooth fairies do. But as Derek slowly adapts to his new position, he begins to rediscover his own forgotten dreams.

The hockey scenes were filmed at the Great Western Forum using players from the Los Angeles Kings

Plot :

Set in Denmark in the 6th century, the film opens with King Hrothgar celebrating the construction of his mead hall, Heorot. However, the noise disturbs and enrages the demon Grendel, who attacks the mead hall and kills a lot of people, but retreats to his mother’s cave when Hrothgar challenges him to fight, his mother taking interest in Hrothgar’s presence. Hrothgar has the mead hall barred, and offers half of the gold in his kingdom for a hero to kill Grendel. Beowulf and his group of Geats arrive by ship, and Beowulf agrees to slay Grendel. The Geats sleep in the mead hall when challenged by Unferth, Hrothgar’s skeptical advisor. They sing, attracting Grendel’s attention and he battles Beowulf, who mortally wounds Grendel by breaking his arm off. Grendel crawls back to his cave and later dies in his mother’s arms.

In vengeance, Grendel’s mother kills the Geats except Beowulf and his friend Wiglaf. Hrothgar reveals that Grendel’s mother killed the men, and Beowulf decides to kill her too when Hrothgar says that she is the last of demonkind, but does not reveal where Grendel’s father is. Beowulf and Wiglaf go to the cave where Grendel’s mother lives, but only Beowulf ventures in, armed with the sword Hrunting and a golden horn shaped like a dragon. Grendel’s mother appears as a golden naked woman and seduces Beowulf into giving her a son who will become legendary in later years. Beowulf returns to Heorot with Grendel’s severed head, which is tossed into the ocean, and lies that he killed Grendel’s mother, and lost Hrunting and the horn to Grendel’s mother. However, Hrothgar privately confronts Beowulf who reveals the truth, Hrothgar then revealing that he is Grendel’s father and is now free from the curse of Grendel’s mother. He informs his people that Beowulf will become king upon his death, and moments later he throws himself to his death. Beowulf becomes king.

Many years on, an aging Beowulf is now a Christian and is haunted by his acts before he became king. He also has a young mistress named Ursula, along with Hrothgar’s wife and the present queen Wealtheow. A dragon burns down a nearby village, leaving Unferth as the only survivor and with the message of “the sins of the fathers”. The horn Beowulf gave to Grendel’s mother is also found by Unferth’s servant Cain. Beowulf realises that the dragon is in fact his son, and goes to kill both him and Grendel’s mother. The dragon attacks Heorot, and directly tries to kill Wealtheow and Ursula, but Beowulf stabs the dragon in the throat, drains its ability to breathe fire, and then literally rips its heart out. Beowulf and the dragon fall from a great height and land on the shore. The dragon’s form melts away into a golden bald-headed man, Beowulf’s son, his body washed away. Beowulf tells Wiglaf the truth before dying.

Beowulf is given a Norse funeral, but Wiglaf, now king, finds the horn and sees Grendel’s mother embrace Beowulf’s body and disappears beneath the ocean, before rising up again with an expectant smile on her face, Wiglaf cynically approaching her.

Christopher Plummer, Tom Waits, and Heath Ledger star in the film, though Ledger’s death one-third of the way through filming caused production to be temporarily suspended. Ledger’s role was recast with Johnny Depp, Jude Law, and Colin Farrell portraying transformations of Ledger’s character Tony as he travels through a dream world.

The film’s world premiere was during the 62nd Cannes Film Festival, out of competition. The UK release of the film was scheduled for 6 June 2009 but pushed back to 16 October 2009 due to its successful premiere at Cannes. The film was given a limited release in the US on Christmas Day 2009 and a wide release on 8 January 2010.

Plot :

In the present day, immortal thousand-year-old Doctor Parnassus (Christopher Plummer) leads a travelling theatre troupe—including a sleight of hand expert, Anton (Andrew Garfield), and a dwarf, Percy (Verne Troyer)—that offers audience members a chance to go beyond reality through a magical mirror in his possession. Parnassus had been able to guide the imagination of others through a deal with the Devil (Tom Waits), who now comes to collect on the arrangement, targeting the doctor’s daughter, Valentina (Lily Cole). The troupe, which is joined by a mysterious outsider named Tony (portrayed by Heath Ledger, Johnny Depp, Jude Law, and Colin Farrell), embark through parallel worlds to rescue the girl.

The Spirit was released in the United States on December 25, 2008, and on DVD and Blu-ray on April 14, 2009. Despite being a commercial and critical failure in theatres, the film found more success on DVD and Blu-ray.The MPAA rated “The Spirit” PG-13 for intense sequences of stylized violence and action, some sexual content, and brief nudity.

Plot:

In a cat-filled mausoleum in Central City, Denny Colt (Gabriel Macht), also known as the masked vigilante The Spirit, receives a phone call from Detective Sussman (Dan Gerrity) about something big going on near an old shipwreck in the mudflats, something that could involve the Spirit’s arch-nemesis, The Octopus (Samuel L. Jackson). The Spirit dons his costume and travels across rooftops while delivering a voice-over soliloquy about the city being his one true love. A woman (Kimberly Cox) is being mugged in an alley below. He manages to save her, receiving a knife wound that he seems to not even notice. The woman asks, “What are you?” The Spirit runs away, catching a ride from Officer Liebowitz (Frank Miller) and heading toward the flats.

At the swampland, a beautiful femme fatale, Sand Saref (Eva Mendes), rises from the water and appears to shoot Sussman multiple times. The Spirit and Liebowitz find the wounded Sussman, but a flashback reveals that it was really the Octopus who shot him in an effort to recover two identical chests underwater. Sand and her husband Mahmoud (Eric Balfour) tried to flee with both chests, but the Octopus wounded Mahmoud and snapped a line connecting the two chests. Sand escaped, leaving one chest behind, which the Octopus retrieved from the murky depths.

After the Octopus kills Liebowitz by ripping his head off, he sends away his cloned henchmen, Ethos, Pathos, and Logos (all played by Louis Lombardi), to be alone to take on the Spirit. Octopus accomplice Silken Floss (Scarlett Johansson) drives up, running over Pathos in the process. She departs with the cargo, expressing her thoughts that the Spirit and the Octopus will “be at it all night.”

The two enemies do indeed take part in a long and highly stylized fight. A still quite alive Pathos shoots the Spirit, putting the hero down for the count, while the Octopus claims that he and the Spirit share a connection in their capability to take such great amounts of punishment.

The Spirit is awakened by his lover Dr. Ellen Dolan (Sarah Paulson), daughter of Police Commissioner Dolan (Dan Lauria). Appearing to be in perfect health despite his gunshot wounds (something which has occurred seemingly many times before), the Spirit is reluctant to be admitted to a hospital but Ellen insists. He is shocked to notice a gold locket in Sussaman’s hand; a piece torn from Sand Saref’s neck earlier. He is berated by Commissioner Dolan, the only person who knows the Spirit’s true identity, for the loss of two officers due to going after the Octopus without permission or backup.

Sand Saref’s locket contains pictures of a much younger Denny Colt (Johnny Simmons) and Sand (Seychelle Gabriel). The two grew up together in Central City. Denny bought Sand the locket as a gift to satisfy the girl’s love of diamonds and other such “shiny things,” including the Golden Fleece of Jason and the Argonauts. They lived happily until Sand’s father, a cop, was accidentally shot dead one night in a struggle between a mobster and Denny’s uncle, a washed-up (and presumably alcoholic) boxer who then committed suicide. Sand said she now hated cops. Fleeing to Europe, she was never heard from again for fifteen years. With her back in Central City, the Spirit’s interest is obviously piqued. He concludes that her desires of youth have evolved into a criminal career.

In a secret lair, the Octopus and Silken Floss open the chest but discover that it does not contain the mysterious Blood of Heracles as expected, but an unseen object that produces an otherworldly glow. Incandescent with rage, the Octopus exaggeratedly slaughters three of four more cloned thugs and orders a fourth to commit seppuku. He learns of Sand’s involvement in the mixing up of the chests and the villains decide a trade is in order.

Sand and Mahmoud visit the office of a high-class fence named Donenfeld (Richard Portnow), whom Sand paid to locate the underwater treasure she wanted — the Argonauts’ Golden Fleece. It is implied that Donenfeld gave up the treasure’s location to the Octopus as well to ensure his family’s safety. For selling her out, Sand transfers Donenfeld’s payment into another account, then persuades the fence to shoot himself.

At St. Alice’s Hospital, the Spirit has fully regenerated good as new. He nearly seduces Ellen, but she has a clearer understanding than expected of the Spirit’s tendency to fall in love with every women he meets. Commissioner Dolan angrily enters with young rookie cop Morgenstern (Stana Katic) and calls the Spirit away to a case.

Sand’s history as one of the world’s great jewel thieves is relayed to the Spirit, the cops both unaware of his past life with the suspect. Unable to believe Sand could be a criminal, the Spirit tracks her down. He is about to arrest her when caught off-guard by her standing before him fully nude. He also sees that Mahmoud has died due to tasting the Blood of Heracles. Sand doesn’t recognize the Spirit as the presumed-dead Denny. She is stunned when he reveals his knowledge of her looking for the Golden Fleece. Sand shoves the Spirit through a window. His trenchcoat stops his fall when it snags on the horn of a gigantic ram statue.

Morgenstern calls with a lead: Pathos was found near the mudflats with his shoes covered in industrial salt. It allows the Spirit to deduce that his nemesis is headquartered under the Feiffer Industrial Salt plant. After taking down several clones, he enters a sewer tunnel and comes face-to-face with Floss, who kisses the Spirit as a distraction while she injects a knockout agent into his neck.

In the Octopus’s lair, the Spirit awakens to find himself tied to a dentist’s chair and surrounded by Nazi paraphernalia. A beautiful belly dancer sensuously dances behind a curtain, prompting the Spirit to break the fourth wall and claim to recognize her as the strangest woman he has ever encountered. It is revealed to be Plaster of Paris (Paz Vega), a psychotic assassin. The Octopus enters after a message from Sand — an exchange of the Golden Fleece and the Blood of Heracles has been arranged at the city projects. The Spirit is told the story of the Octopus’s quest for immortality. His and Floss’s experimentation eventually led to the creation of a serum (something of a scientific equivalent to the Elixir of Life) that could grant immortality or, at least, nigh indestructibility. Denny’s corpse was used as a test subject. He awoke in a casket, broke out of his grave, and went to see Commissioner Dolan, creating a new identity to fight crime as a police spy. The Octopus injected himself and arch-enemies were born.

The Octopus intends to drink the mystical Blood and expand his immortality toward becoming a god. But first he intends to kill the Spirit by having Plaster slice him into tiny bits. She instead cuts him loose when reminded of a romantic encounter. The Spirit then gives the Octopus a beating, crushing him under a large Reichsadler eagle statue. He escapes with Plaster and they kiss, only for her to impale the Spirit on her sword.

Bleeding profusely, he stumbles to the city docks, collapses into the water and confronts the beautifully ethereal Angel of Death, the siren Lorelei (Jaime King), who has haunted the Spirit’s sleep. He is the only man to have ever wrongfully escaped death. His hallucinations lead to surreal images of her taking him where he truly belongs. But he manages to gather his senses by remembering Ellen, Sand, and the city all needing him. As the Spirit swims to the surface, Lorelei vows vengeance.

The Spirit is again put into Ellen’s critical care in the hospital. At the projects, Sand and her lastest henchman fly in with the Blood of Heracles to meet Floss and a clone carrying the Golden Fleece. After a four-way standoff, Sand attempts to convince Floss to get out of serving the Octopus before he kills her. They transfer the treasures and both minions are shot, at which point the Octopus emerges from his truck. He asks Floss for the vase. Unable to take a side, Floss drives off as the Spirit suddenly materializes.

The Octopus unloads with progressively bigger guns, downing him with a pair of four-barreled shotguns. Dolan’s SWAT team then storms the area and opens fire. The carnage ends when Morgenstern uses a huge combination RPG to blow off one of the Octopus’s arms and Dolan shoots him in the head. The Octopus gets to the Blood of Heracles and prepares to drink it, but Sand shoots the vase just in time. The Spirit then uses a grenade to blow the Octopus to smithereens.

Showdown over, the Spirit gives Sand her locket back. They kiss as Ellen looks on, feeling betrayed. The old flames bid each other goodbye and the Spirit convinces Dolan to let Sand go in gratitude for saving the world. He tries to patch things up with Ellen, but she accepts that their relationship will always be fractured. Elsewhere, Floss discovers the Octopus’s severed finger crawling toward her. She picks it up and departs, possibly planning to clone The Octopus. At dawn, the Spirit stands triumphant on a rooftop with his cat.
